ROTOR GUARD INFORMATION FOR DJI PHANTOMS
"The rotor Guards are indeed valuable for those who are new to flying the Phantom or just want to maximize their anti-crash/damage odds. "
Unfortunately, the stock DJI guards also come with a significant weight penalty (>80g) which can take a bite out of your flight time. They also affect the aerodynamic effects of the props (pardon, rotors) enough to have an impact on flight charactaristics.
Some tips for those who use the guards on their Phantom:
1. If/when you take the guards off, do NOT put the same screws used to mount them back in to the bottom of the arm on the Phantom. They are longer than the stock screws in those locations and can easily penetrate the motor and damage the coils inside. This is a common mistake, don't be the next one to do the "prop guard screws face palm:" ;)
2. Many people are now using the DJI 9443 props that come with both versions of the Phantom 2 on their Phantom 1 as an easy upgrade to boost flight time. If you do so (or use any 9" options), DJI also makes larger prop guards which will work with those. Using the smaller guards with those is pointless and may damage the props.
3. The guards do reduce the effective amount of lift produced by a small margin. Although the NAZA is able to compensate for this by the most part to where it's not immediately evident to the pilot, it does meant that you may need to adjust stick input in some situations when using them. For example, the "vortex ring state" the Phantom may experience when descending straight down too fast is likely to take effect sooner with the prop guards on than without.
