How do you know when the batteries on the transmitter should be replaced?

You don't! .... and you don't want to find out when it's too late!
You could buy a little battery checker, but still not great.
I wouldn't let your batteries get under 50%!
My personal policy is to replace controller batteries with new DOUBLE ALKALINE
batteries every 6 full DJI Phantom battery discharges. So after around 150 minutes of flight time
You don't need to throw the old batteries away.. use them at home for remote controls or clocks etc. They will still go forever. But you don't want a "Soft" battery to let you down, just when you need it!
