FILMING WITH GoPRO in 4K and A GIMBLE on DJI PHANTOM
"hoping to shoot in 4k raw and edit out jello effect which seems inevitable. Just wondering what your views are on the Zenmuse HD-3D gimble"
I am just looking into purchasing a setup here in New Zealand for commercial filming. I was thinking of using a gopro hero 3+ and am hoping to shoot in 4k raw and edit out jello effect which seems inevitable. Just wondering what your views are on the Zenmuse HD-3D gimble. I see in your video that you prefer a fixed camera! This is the first time I have seen this mentioned anywhere. I saw a video somewhere else that showed a comparison beween the vision+, HD2D AND HD3D. The HD3D looked amazing in that video. Do you think it is more of a case of being able to fly your phantom well. I intend to mostly fly low close and slow to obtain good shots. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks David.

Hi Dave,
Don't be hesitant! DJI Phantoms are a great product for the money!
And Jello's not inevitable, it's just annoying at times!
If you are aware of it, you can re-shoot on the same day and often eliminate it. (Mostly) We did a test last week with 3 Phantoms all flying the same path, all set up the same and they all came back with different outcomes! And the same is true in a Helicopter.
Sometimes one will just start a harmonic vibration and it can't sort itself out until you stop or make it do something different. Just being aware and being able to check your results is often enough.
We tend to only comment on "Straight out of the box" situations as there are too many custom set ups available, but it is hard to work your way through it all and there's a whole lot of ignorance and misinformation out there! The whole 4k thing on a GoPro is a bit over rated in my mind! Sure it shoots at 4k (At poor frame rates) but at the end of the day, its just shooting more of the same! Same artefacts, same fixed exposure & same gain issues.
Its not like it suddenly uses a better sensor, chip set and lens .....
So it's good in some instances, but very limited.
The 2.7k option is ok if you plan to use stabilization software (to allow zooming), but again, the actual images are not much cleaner, just bigger. They just cant be better.
Its the same camera! (Unlike a pro camera that is actually downgrading to get
smaller file sizes) A pro camera has the ability to capture far more information
and much more cleanly.
At this stage, many of the semi pros tend to use the 3+ with a Gimble and then stablize the images with WARP (Adobe after effects). The pro's wouldn't use a Phantom for all the reasons you mentioned. It's just not stable enough, won't fly far enough, is too light and they need to carry a camera that is truly HD and can shoot really high res images.
But hey! Get a good day and some of the results are stunning!!
Just need some patience .....
I really like the Phantom II for the money and it takes a lot of the hassles out of it all.
We are getting access to some software next week that they say is the most amazing Jello software ever released with complete jello elimination!
So I will be interested to see how that looks!!
Flying low and slow is often not the best way. The Phantom actually seems to smooth out with a little more speed. And low is ok, providing there's no thermal issues or wind. But at the end of the day, you don't shoot aerials on a crappy day anyway if it for commercial use. (Unless you have to)
Don't know if that has helped or not, but please let me know if you have more questions
Regards
David
